Meta-Text

As part of the on-going development of MSTA 130, I have worked with Dr. Emerson to develop software to help students learn how to ask good questions that will lead them to understand their assignments better. In this course, we use "business memos" to frame all assignments as realistically as possible. Our helping tool, still early in its development phase, is called "Meta-Text". (First there was static text which simply presented information. Then came hypertext, which connected information together. Meta-Text goes beyond the text to allow the user to see how to think about the text.) The software is developed in Macromedia Flash MX as a stand-alone package using a back-end XML database of assignments and questions/thinking ideas. We are working on developing an information package and a tool to allow instructors to create their own data files for distribution to their students.

PETAL Workshop on Grading, March 2003

Here is the PowerPoint presentation from the workshop. Contact me if you want a copy of the handout, which consisted of the slides from the presentation, a list of references compiled by the University of Massachusetts Amherst Office of Academic Planning and Assessment, an example of a "multi-faceted assessment system" from the New York State MST Resource Guide, and information on aligning achievement targets with assessment methods from Richard Stiggins, Student-Involved Classroom Assessment, Third Edition.

Writing in Mathematics Classes Workshop

On March 22, 2000, I ran a professional development workshop for the middle and high school mathematics teachers in the Webster School District. This workshop dealt with "Communicating Mathematics" and focused on different techniques and projects I have used to incorporate writing and other communication skills into my mathematics classes. Some of the resources from the workshop are available for download at the right and below. I will make more of the material available if it is requested. To download these correctly, you will probably need MS Internet Explorer, rather than Netscape. Power Point Presentation (108 kB)
