Vertical Shifts

Suppose you have a function f. What does the graph of y = f(x) + a look like? It has exactly the same shape, but each of the values of the old graph y = f(x) is increased by a (or decreased if a is negative). Thus, this has the effect of picking up the entire function and moving up a distance a from the horizontal, or x axis.
