Here's a brief picture catalog of surfaces that we've run across. These are definitely some of the simplest and most common surfaces, but they are by no means all of the possibilities. Sometimes you'll get lucky and the surface you're dealing with is a simple modification of one of these by translation, scaling or reflection. If not, use the contour diagram and the method of sectioning to form an image of the surface. (Note that this catalog is the same as the one given on page 48 of McCallum et al..)
