Defining Disability, Disorder, and Disadvantage

 

The use of adaptive technology will continue to improve the lives of students with the following terms:

Disability: A disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
        Disabilities include:
                Paralysis  
                Muscular Dystrophy
                Down Syndrome
                Learning Disabilities
                Dyslexia
                Hearing impairment

Disorder: A disorder is a disturbance that limits the physical or mental ability of a student.
        Disorders include:
                Bi-polar
                Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
                Depression
                Autism
                Sleeping Disorders
                Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Disadvantage: A disadvantage is something that weakens the performance level and limits someone from achieving their fullest potential.
        Disadvantages include:
                Language   
                Low socioeconomic status
                Race
                Gender
                Height
                Religion
