Spring

When does Spring begin? The spring season is the transition season from winter to summer. Spring occurs almost simultaneously with the equinox. Spring begins on March 21 and goes through the months of April and May.

What is the equinox?  The equinox usually occurs on or around the first day of Spring. On this day, it appears that the sun will cross directly over the equator. In reality the sun is not really moving but the earth is. As this happens the top half of the earth becomes tilted more toward the sun as winter turns to spring.

Characteristics of Spring Spring is a time of transition not only for plant and animal life, but for the weather too. It can mean weather extremes from very cold and snowy days to humid and stormy days.  Some of the country's biggest snowfalls have occurred in March, and the period from March to May is the time of year when much of the south is most likely to get severe thunderstorms with hail and even tornadoes.

Why does Spring happen? This is the point in the yearly cycle when balance exists between light and dark. The Equinox has equal times of daylight and darkness which causes the season of Spring.
