Winter

When does winter start? Winter begins after Fall and comes before Spring. Winter begins on December 22, when the winter solstice occurs. January and February are typically the coldest months of the winter season.

What is winter solstice? Winter solstice occurs when the earth's north pole is tilted farther way from the sun than at any other time of the year. At this time earth is closest to the sun and the sun is the lowest in the sky than any other times of the year.

Characteristics of Winter

During the winter we see some rain, but sometimes we see other forms of precipitation too. Winter precipitation also includes snow, sleet, and freezing rain.  The type of precipitation we get depends on the temperature inside the clouds and the temperature between the clouds and the ground.

Why does winter happen?

The sun’s rays come in at a shallow angle with more atmosphere to filter through. There are fewer hours in the day and less sunlight.
