What is Multiplication?

• There are two terms which describe the three numbers in a multiplication problem.
• The factors are the numbers that are being multiplied together.
• The product is the result or answer of multiplying the multiplicand by the multiplier.
• A multiplication problem may be written horizontally such as 2 x 7 = 14. In this example 2 and 7 are the factors and 14 is the product of the multiplication.
• A multiplication problem may be written vertically.

  Properties of Multiplication

  • There are four properties involving multiplication that will help make problems easier to solve. They are the commutative, associative, multiplicative identity and distributive properties.

             Commutative property: When two numbers are multiplied together, the product is the same regardless of  the order of the multiplicands. For example 4 x 2 = 2 x 4

              Associative Property: When three or more numbers are multiplied, the product is the same regardless of the grouping  of the factors. For example (2 x 3) x 4 = 2 x (3 x 4)

Multiplicative Identity Property: The product of any number and one is that number. For example 5 x 1 = 5

Distributive property: The sum of two numbers times a third number is equal to the sum of each addend times

the third number. For example 4 * (6 + 3) = 4*6 + 4*3

How to use: Find the numbers you are multiplying on the chart.       

One number on the left column of the chart going down and

and the other number on the top going across. Find where the

two numbers meet. Then that number will be your answer to
