Greek Clothing

General
Greek clothing was very simple yet elegant. Styles could be created without any sewing, just simply folding fabric and holding them in places with broaches. Clothing in Ancient Greece consisted of loose-fitting tunics. The clothing was generally homemade and was the same material that blankets were made of. The fabric was full of color and had very intricate designs. Women and men wore sandals, soft shoes, slippers, or boots, but at home they often went barefoot. The wealthy would wear leather sandals and have long hair. The first real hat, the broad-brimmed petasos, was invented by the ancient Greeks! It was worn only for traveling. A chin strap held it on, so when it was not needed as protection from the weather, it could hang down ones back. The ancient Greeks could buy cloth and clothing in the agora, but that was expensive.

Children
Greek babies often wore little to no clothing most of the time depending on the weather. When it became cold outside they would be wrapped up in a cloth. The babies would wear cloth diapers. Children also wore clothing that was wrapped around their waste kind of like shorts.

Men
Men also wore a chiton that was similar to the women's but was much shorter in length. Over the chiton they would wear a woolen cloth called a himation. They would also occasionally wear a broad brimmed hat called the petasos.
Men fastened their hair up with a golden broach if long enough.

Women
Women had two main articles of clothing one being the chiton and the other was a cloak. The peplos were large pieces of rectangle fabric that was very heavy and usually consist of wool. The chiton was made of a much lighter material such as linen. On very rare occasions Greek women would wear a flat brimmed hat with a high peaked crown. Wealthy women wore elaborate hairstyles that were kept in place with ribbons or hairnets. Some even wore wigs. To give women shape they would wear a girdle around their waste.
