Diet
Greek Diet

The Greek population was growing so quickly that the there became a shortage of food. Farmers had to work hard to make a living due to the harsh climate and stony land. Only lentils, barley, grapevines, olive trees and sesame seeds would grow. Farming could barely produce enough food for the people to survive so the people of Greece turned to the sea to provide the rest. The Greeks would often have to import wheat from Egypt to make good bread.

The diet was fairly healthy with lots of bread, beans and olives. In the summer, there were vegetables, fresh fruit and herbs. In winter, they ate apples, chestnuts, lentils and cheese. They Greeks did not have sugar but used flower scented honey instead. The sea provided much the the Greek's diet.

Food for the Greeks had various religious and philosophical meanings. They were not allowed to eat meat unless it has been sacrificed by god or hunted in the wild. Greeks believed that it it was wrong to eat animals that were tamed or domesticated.

They drank wine and had bread baked from whole grains. The seas provided shark, eel, and octopus for the wealthy and salted dried fish for the poor.
