Some Hints for Choosing Substitutions

There are a few standard things to try for substitution. If there is a rational function, try setting u equal to the denominator. If there is a power (such as the examples above) let u be whatever is being raised to the power. Similarly, it is a good idea to try letting u be the argument to any transcendental functions like sine or cosine or natural log.
