Deforestation

In the past year, massive amounts of the Amazon rainforest have been destroyed. According to Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research, 3769 square miles of rainforest were lost to deforestation in a twelve month period ending in July. marking the highest rate of deforestation since 2008.

Wildlife Trade

Amazon wildlife trade has been an issue for a long time, creating concern with the survival of species in the rainforest. In the Brazilian Amazon, wild animals are trapped by indigenous people. Once captured, the animals, either dead or alive, are passed on to numerous middlemen.

Fires in the Rainforest

Over the past few months, the Amazon rainforest has been inflicted with dangerous wildfires, impacting animal’s habitats. The fires have began to diminish as of September, but the damage has had global repercussions. These fires may contribute to climate change, since the Amazon has the ability to absorb more than 20% of the earth’s carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
