The Order of Integration

The order of integration (whether to integrate x or y first) depends on two things:

1.
the shape of the region of integration, and
2.
the function being integrated.
Normally, the first of these is most important. The second can help you to decide if the shape doesn't tell you anything. As you'll see there are even some functions that cannot be integrated in one direction, but which are simple to integrate in the other direction.
